One of my favorite podcasts is Barnes and Nobles’ “Meet the Writers.” If you’ve ever wondered what the hell you’re doing as a writer, what it takes – or doesn’t – check out these interviews.
The range of work by the authors is so wide – literary to genre, adult to children, non-fiction to memoir – it makes you realize there’s no one way to do anything (sometimes it’s easy to get hung up on perceived constraints).
The only bit of information/advice that seems to be completely consistent is consistency: if you don’t put your butt in the chair to write, then you won’t get anything written. You need to write whether or not you’re inspired. In my experience, sometimes it’s a good thing to step away for a few days and come back fresh. But as a general rule, it’s a pretty obvious one: write or nothing gets written. It’s the difference between the people who say, “I’ve always wanted to write a novel,” and the people who do it.
