Description

Antigone Brown is a girl who builds robots—spindly-legged walkers, lunchboxes that follow lines in the floor—and who has no chance at building her own life until, despite loneliness and grief and a thousand inhibitions, she takes a leap into fate.  It all begins on a ferry boat ride…

Twenty-six years ago, Jane Brown left New Bordeaux, pregnant and alone, never to return.  Or so she thought.  Now her daughter, Antigone (Tig), has moved the two of them back to this small city on the edge of Vermont.  Jane has no choice in the matter; she’s been in a persistent vegetative state for the past three years.

Tig is determined to find Vivienne Moreau, a former nun who helped cared for her mother as a child in the orphanage.  Tig is certain Vivienne holds the key to her future even though Jane has always made it clear that Vivienne isn’t family, and only family can be trusted.  Despite the guilt that plagues her, Tig knows she must take action—Jane’s life, and her own, hang in the balance. Maybe renewing these connections will spark Jane’s brain back into awareness.

Yet Vivienne is determined to use Tig for her own purposes and as Tig delves more and more into the past, she becomes embroiled in present-day politics and discovers a betrayal that causes her to question everything she knows about trust and morality.

Was it a mistake to return to New Bordeaux?  Is Tig, like her namesake Antigone, “a bit small for it all”?

Antigone Rising explores the complex relationship between mothers and daughters, the intersection of the personal and the political, and the distinctions between religious faith and morality.  Ultimately, however, it is a story of love and friendship, and the hidden strengths of the human mind and soul.

Why am I doing this?
Because as Tim O’Reilly says — my problem isn’t piracy, it’s obscurity. While I’m in the process of finding a publisher, this book is sitting on my computer feeling bored and maybe you’re sitting in front of your computer feeling bored. Could be a love match, who knows? Even once it’s found a publisher, I hope I’ll be allowed to keep offering this book for free.
