Wearable Tech fashion show: Second Skin

Friday, May 30th, 2008

I won’t post another story I’ve seen on Boing Boing for at least a week — I promise — but I just couldn’t resist this one:

Xeni [Jardin] goes backstage at a wearable technology fashion show held at the San Francisco Exploratorium, and tries digital and analog clothing on for size.

Make your own laptop/iPod skins

Laptop skin by Kmye
I recently read a brief post on Boing Boing about Skinizi, which makes skins for laptops and iPods. The cool thing about Skinizi (not mentioned in their post) is that you can submit your own design for Skinizi to sell. FYI – it’s a French company, so the pay is in euros.

If you want to make skins just for yourself, Kathryn Vercillo recommends Schtickers:

“Schtickers lets you easily create laptop skins using their online iCreate Laptop Skins lab. Basically you just open up an account, upload a photo and add the other things that you want such as text, backgrounds and graphics. You can fool around with the online program until you’re satisfied with what you want. Then they’ll do all the work of actually producing the laptop skins.”

Author podcasts range far and wide

Meet the Authors PodcastOne of my favorite podcasts is Barnes and Nobles’ “Meet the Writers.”  If you’ve ever wondered what the hell you’re doing as a writer, what it takes – or doesn’t – check out these interviews.

The range of work by the authors is so wide – literary to genre, adult to children, non-fiction to memoir – it makes you realize there’s no one way to do anything (sometimes it’s easy to get hung up on perceived constraints).

The only bit of information/advice that seems to be completely consistent is consistency: if you don’t put your butt in the chair to write, then you won’t get anything written. You need to write whether or not you’re inspired. In my experience, sometimes it’s a good thing to step away for a few days and come back fresh. But as a general rule, it’s a pretty obvious one: write or nothing gets written. It’s the difference between the people who say, “I’ve always wanted to write a novel,” and the people who do it.

DIY diva Alison Lewis combines tech and craft

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Alison Lewis graduated from Parsons School of Design but she doesn’t just make things we put on — she makes things that light up, tune in and turn on. And she’ll be showing us how in her Fall ’08 DIY book, “SwitchCraft: Battery-Powered Projects to Stitch and Sew.” The cool thing about this book is that it combines crafting and tech skills. If you know how to sew or knit then you can make toys that light up when they kiss or hack a purse to shine a groovy message to all the world.

Okay, I know I’m jumping the gun on the book, but there are other things you can do in the meantime. Lewis is also the host of My Home 2.0 and when I went to their site, I couldn’t help but notice the solar cell phone charger project. I don’t camp, but there are plenty of other times I find myself without an outlet, so to speak.

Check out Lewis’s interview on GeekBrief:
